In order to meet the safety standards enforced by regulatory authorities, food commodities and botanicals are required to undergo pesticide residue testing. The tests described in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia <561> “Articles of Botanical Origin” and the European SANTE/11813/2017 guidance documents allow for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of these pesticide residues. These analyses are designed primarily to determine if the amount of pesticide residues are maintained below the maximum residue limits (MRLs) and/or tolerances provided. At Nucro-Technics, we have the equipment and expertise to fulfill the regulatory requirements for pesticide residue testing.
Approaches Followed for Pesticide Residue Testing
As new pesticides are developed and registered, the list of pesticide residues to be analyzed continues to grow. Multi-residue methods have been put in place that allow for the simultaneous detection of multiple analytes. These methods can be separated into two parts; sample preparation and determination of residues.
The QuEChERS approach for sample preparation is the method of choice, due to its cost effectiveness and speed. This technique involves sample homogenization, extraction and cleanup, and results in the isolation of pesticide residues from the sample, ready for analysis.
The modern approach for the determination of residues involves chromatographic and spectroscopic instruments. Gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) allows for simultaneous identification and quantification of a wide range of analytes. For those pesticides that are not directly amenable to GC analysis, the liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique is preferred, and enables direct, selective, and sensitive multi-residue analysis. At Nucro-Technics, we have the capabilities to perform this analysis using both types of instruments using validated methods.
